The Magic Faraway Tree

I'm really enjoying finding books that I loved as a child - The Magic Faraway Tree was a firm favourite of mine. I loved reading as a child and when I came across this Enid Blyton classic I could'nt put it down. I even pulled a sick day so I could stay home and read it from cover to cover - mum thought I must have been very ill as I stayed in my room all day. Naughty I know!

I have been looking for this 1980's printed addition for a while as I love the Georgina Hargreaves illustrations. There is a series of them and I came across The Folk of the Faraway Tree a couple of months ago. And finally recently found The Magic Faraway Tree in the same op shop.

We have been reading them to Tom - he loves the illustrations and as the book is set out in chapters (a different branch/land in the Faraway Tree per chapter) it makes for easy night time reading.

I'm now looking for the rest of the series and would like to start Bell off on the Famous Five books. I'm a big fan of Enid Blytons books and really love seeing my children enjoying them too.

What's popular in your house for daytime / bedtime reading? Do you have favourites you loved as a child?

Happy reading!

  1. Oh i love Enid Blyton too and have the Wishing tree series and I am awaiting the time to give them to the kids...for the moment we read them when we go to my parents place. Do your kids laugh at "dick and fanny!" I have to say, it is wonderful for their imagination!

    1. Oh my goodness Brenda! Big sister Bell loves reading this out to Tom and says the names "Dick and Fanny" out aloud. So funny!

  2. Oh me too. Just finished reading the Faraway tree series (my original hardcover ones from the 70's) to my 6yo. He loved it so much he did them as a book report at school and everyone got so excited that the teacher is letting them watch old videos now at the end of term. The wishing chair series are great too and I can't wait until he is ready for famous five, I was a big fan. mel x

  3. Enid Blyton lovers here too - some I have found I am not so happy to read to The Munchkin (5) but The Faraway tree etc aer perfect. We were able to get hold of Kate Winslet reading the three books on Cds and we often listen to them in the car. We also enjoyed The Children of Cherry Tree Farm and the other books in the series. We are also reading and re-reading an abridged version of Heidi, Milly Molly Mandy and the stories by Jill Tomlinson. Hmm, must go and fish my copies of The Wishing chair like the one in your pics out of Mums roof...

    1. I have an old copy of The Children of Cherry Tree Farm that I have yet to read. I would love to get some of the Enid Blyton books on CD - great idea for long car journeys.

  4. I am always on the lookout for good chapter books to read to the bigger kids. We read the magic faraway tree and the enchanted wood a little while ago, which they loved. I wrote a little bit here with some more suggestions: http://sevendoggydog.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/roald-dahl.html

We are on to The Secret Garden at the moment which I loved as a child. It's nice to see the kids enjoying it now.

    1. The Roald Dahl books are wonderful - I read them as a child and still love them now. We bought Bell the complete collection for her Birthday this year. My favourite has always been the BFG.

  6. I have to say that The Magic Faraway Tree was one of MY favourites too. It's such a great, magical story! I love your beautifully-illustrated version. Mine was just black & white. Old-fashioned children's books are so special. :-)
