Dreaming of a kitchen garden.............

My poor garden needs some TLC.  With a welcome break of good weather,  I'm feeling inspired  again.

I have been stalking google images (above) for inspiration.

I have lots of plants in my vege garden but they are looking a little worse for wear.  The birds have  been having a mini feast (due to no grapes on the vines - these birds are gutsy), our dog and small people have also been running through it.

So, my next step is to create some kind of fencing around the garden as well as covering to keep the birds away.

Do you have a vege/kitchen garden?  What grows well for you?  What do you use to keep pests, pets and children from eating and stomping their way through all your hard work?

  2. OOh, i like those though I can't get over the amount of path space (i was mentally working out how many more broccoli etc i could squeeze in there!!! I love tee pees and am planning on getting some willow fronds in spring to have a bash at making one myself.
we found that having the raised beds delineates where the kid can roam and where not. my main issue at the mo is chooks. i love to let them roam, but we have chook poo EVERWHERE! we've got temporary fencing-like a chicken wire with electric fence post do-dads holding it up, so we can keep them off the vegges but it's kinda messy looking. I'd love wire fencing that looks more stylish, that the sun can get through-like the stuff they used to use instead of picket fencing in the 30's but taller, so i can put some up more permanently. Can't find anything though...now theres a craft project and a half. maybe i can macrame a whole fence with wire!!!
my fingers are slowly greening, but I've never been able to grow a decent crop of coriander without it bolting immediately it's ready to use. we have a small garden but have packet in fruit trees and bishes, a couple of nut trees, a grape vine, a tunnel house and two biggish raised beds. i've started planting vegges and herbs in with the flowers around the front so it's only a matter of time until the the edible stuff takes over completely...

  4. Love those pics, that would be the dream. I got mud squirting up between my toes when I walked down the yard today. Everthing is so wet and boggy here. The tomatoes have fungus from all the rain, depressing!!! Oh and something is taking a bite from the strawberries.

  5. How idyllic! I dream of a veggie patch. Unfortunately, I cannot even grow mint. Seriously. I have killed mint (which apparently overtakes entire gardens in the blink of an eye on sheer neglect) a number of times. I think I kill it with love. At least it's from a good place. One day. One day. I can't wait to see what you do! Jx

  8. I always get some urge to be so garden-like when I see pic's like these - truth is (and my family will tell you!) that a little garden like this would be heading to heaven a week after I started. I wish I had a green thumb!! xx

  10. Lovely inspiration photos. We have a raised garden bed that was put in a couple of years ago when we landscaped the back yard. I love it. It's made of concrete blocks and rendered, about 1x5m (internal measurement) and about 75cm high. Great height for gardening and keeping pets out. Kids love to walk around on top of the wall and jump off onto the grass. We seem to be snail and slug free in there but the possums are a problem. Still, we manage to grow herbs and quite a few different vegies. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  11. Don't these look do orderly! We have raised beds, so our dog keeps out. Unfortunately rabbits get in though, but have yet to do much damage. One of our gardens is completely overgrown with coriander, and rhubarb has also been going nuts. I've never done a winter garden before and am so happy to have broccoli doing well, but the caulis have seemed to failed. All thd best with spring nearly on the horizon :)
