What are you reading?

“A house without books is like a room without windows.”

What are you reading?....................

I have always been an avid reader.  Although not so much in the last few years since having the boys.

I always have a pile of books by my bed though.  An assortment of novels, biographies, gardening, sewing and crochet (when it comes to sewing and crochet I'm doing more reading than actual "doing").  We went to the library last week and came home with piles of books for myself and the boys.  We have hardly been at all over the summer so there were lots of newbies in there.  Mr H and I also read alot to Tom and George.  There are books in their rooms and the playroom.  We always make sure Bell has a book on the go and see that she reads every night before lights out.  It definately has improved her reading and is a good way of settling down for the night.

Lately in the evenings when the kids are in bed I have been curling up with books and a cuppa and also stealing the odd afternoon when the boys are asleep or occupied with toys to read some more.  I think with the cooler months coming I'm craving some good reads.  I love my Irish Authors and anything set in England.  Light murder mystery, travel and funny books on modern day lives and parenting are always a go for me.  I've never been a fan of very violent, heavy or sad reads as I find it effects my mood.  I remember reading the Diary of Anne Frank at school and was upset for days after finishing it.  Are you the same?

I've just started a Nancy Mitford book Madame De Pompadour (first published in 1954).  And I will be hunting out a book on Nancy Mitford too as her family and background are as interesting if not more so than the stories she writes!

So - bookwise whats on your bedside table?  What are you loving right now?

Care to pass on any great recommendations?

Happy reading!

  1. I love books too! I have little time right now so many of my reads are non-fiction...gardening, parenting, and crafting magazines...I can't wait to curl back up with a good novel! Oh...and I feel the same way about sad and violent books...I want to feel good when I read so those are a no no for me! Love that pic of your little guy!

  3. I'm 3/4 of the way through the epic 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. It's mesmerising and intriguing.. and occasionally I dip into some poetry, Hone Tuwhare in particular, but other than that my bedside pile is all scientific papers... siiigh. x

  4. Ha, I recognise that book your son is reading...we read it not long ago...Enchanted Wood ...or Magic Faraway Tree? I have just finished reading 'The Kashmir Shawl' by Rosie Thomas. Can't recommend it enough....so delicious! Now I'm reading My GrandFathers Blessings by Rachel Remen...lovely. We are always devouring books this end...but it seems to be more like one a month than one a week these days :)

  5. I've just finished 'the unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry' which I really enjoyed! I was like you, read very little since having the girls then last year I set up a book club with my friend and have discovered the delight of falling into a new world every so often! Saying that there's a pile of house/craft mags and a gardening book at the side of my bed....must start another novel! :) x

  6. I too have a stack of books by my bed, mostly from the library as I very rarely buy a book these days. I can't resist magazines though... I definitely buy too many of those! At the moment I'm reading The Book Thief which is set in Nazi Germany so not overly cheerful, it is written beautifully though. I'm not really into heavy or sad reads either but so far so good with this book. Julie :)

  7. This is my first visit here, but I will comment anyway! Have you read Maeve Binchy's new book, A Week in Winter? It is her very last book since she died, and I am sooooo sad about that. The book was great! Who are your favorite Irish authors? I love reading about Ireland, too! Hugs and Hello!

  8. I have a pile of thrift-ed books next to my bed, waiting for a quiet moment. I am looking forward to the school holidays so I can get started on them (I'm a school teacher you see). I found a copy of The Power of One recently - I saw the movie when I was a teenager, but I've haven't read the novel. My 10 year old Harry just read 'Gangsta Granny' by David Walliams - it sort of had a "Roald Dahl" style - he found the story to be hilarious. My Matilda (age 7) is loving the 'Sophie's Misfortune's' series. It's the French equivalent of Enid Blyton style books. Think naughty little girl with a kind heart, getting into all sorts of scrapes.
