Where the fairies play

Since the mushrooms appeared in our back yard (I decided to play it safe and NOT eat them) I have been talking to Tom about fairies.  I want there to be more to their play than trains, planes and automobiles!  We decided that as there are mushrooms in the garden, there must be fairies.  So we decided to make a fairy garden in one of the half wine barrels we have.  I have been collecting a few bits and pieces, some of which I have put away somewhere "safely" but have yet to find!

The fairy cottage is my favourite find.  It's really heavy so difficult for little hands to lift, so it should stay put.  I found it online on Trademe along with the mushrooms.  The other bits like the coloured stones are easily found in bargain/craft stores.

A visit to the garden shop to buy the flowers and we were all set.  We will add to it (will plant some moss next) no doubt and I imagine some things will go "walkies" but I want this to be a tactile garden, Tom is so gentle with everything and I'm hoping this will rub off on George who is anything but gentle.  Tom finds the cottage fascinating and ever the practical boy he wants to know how the fairies will get into the cottage if everything is closed tight....................magic I tell him.

We have another small barrel which we will fill with soil and plants and pop some dinosaurs into.  A few succulents and pools of mud will be perfect for the boys to plodge some plastic dinos around in.

It's all about nurturing imagination and showing them by taking care of the plants and flowers we can have a special place in our garden to visit and hopefully entice the fairies to come a stay a while.

Is there any magic in your garden?

  4. What a special little garden! I love it :) Sunny would absolutely love that... She is so into fairies and unicorns. She's told me that when she grows up she wants to be a mermaid - We'll see how that goes.

  5. I understand the elves like to build their houses in tree roots - sometimes you can see a little door. They're always very pleased if you make them a garden with a little path and maybe a twig patio set!

  6. My word verification for that comment was Alphonso Mingduri, which coincidentally is the name of one of the elves that live in my garden.

  11. What a great idea for a garden in a wine barrel. We most definitely have fairies in our garden! Matilda leaves food for them all the time. They seem to like almonds and cake sprinkles the most.

  16. That is too cute for words. My daughter would love this. When we were out walking at the weekend she would look for tiny holes or "caves" in the ground and declare that was where the fairies lived. x
