Weekending in a retro caravan

On Friday we packed up the car and headed up the Coast - just a short car journey away, to a spot that truly takes your breath away once you navigate your way over gravel roads and winding hills.

We borrowed a friends retro caravan for the weekend, a Birthday getaway for me and my family.

The weather was beautiful, and we started each day with a swim before breakfast.  The rest of the day was just spent lazing in the sun. walks along the beach, swimming, eating and running around after the boys.  There were no showers and a smelly long drop loo, but when you looked at where we were and the stunning landscape around us it didn't matter at all.

The best thing is that Mr H is now a caravan convert so it looks like my dream of having a retro caravan will one day become a reality.  We can't wait to go again, and hopefully next summer we will be in our own caravan in this little slice of paradise by the sea.

  2. Gosh that looks superb. Can you tell me where that is? I am hoping to bring the family to NZ North towards the end of the year and am hoping to head North of Auckland into less populated territory. Xx Deb

    1. If you are looking to camp and rough it. Tauwharenui Regional Park is just beautiful. Another stunning beach campground, that has nice cabins to is Waipu Cove - my favourite beach.

    2. The amazing thing about New Zealand Beaches is how uncrowded they can be. Some days we go to the beach and can be the only ones there. This is on the East Coast of the North Island. Message me if you want some tips on where to go. I know North of Auckland well. I was born in Auckland and my family are from further North so can tell you about some really amazing spots. xo

  6. Where did you go - the photos and scenery is stunning. Looks like a perfect birthday getaway. I have to admit it still takes me a while to get used to long drops when we camp at DOC sites.

  9. Such amazing scenery, it seems so big! Our English countryside and scenery always seems on such a smaller scale. Happy Birthday and good luck with your caravan dream coming true!

  11. Just stunning. My husband and I have also been tossing up the retro caravan idea, so far, it remains just that - an idea. What a fantastic birthday experience. New Zealand's beaches are just stunning. I feel reinvigorated just looking at these photos, you must have returned home feeling even more so.
