Gone fishing!

Sunday morning we took the boys fishing - a 15 minute drive to the coast, down a gravel road and a few twists and turns to the far end of the beach where the sand is piled with driftwood. It's a popular place to fish from the waters edge.

We didn't catch a single fish! But it was a great way to send a couple of hours in the sunshine. Building sandcastles, exploring, digging about in the sand, collecting shells and building forts out of driftwood.

We will try our luck at the wharf this weekend, where hopefully the fish will be biting!

So glad it's Friday, and the weekend is here. Have a great one!

Down the road

On the long weekend we wandered down the road to our neighbours house.

They were out for the day so we went over to let one of their dogs out and take him for a walk with our dog Maybell.

The boys love it on their farm, especially Tom who walks around the place like he owns it.  He lead the way and took us to his favourite spots, the pond, rope swing and wool shed.  Sheep chutes are the perfect slide for small children!

The views are breathtaking from their spot - you can see the sea - the surrounding hills, farms and vineyards.  Just so very beautiful and something I never get tired of or ever take for granted.

Next time we visit I'm going to see if my behind will fit down that sheep chute!

*That sweet little cottage is on our wander......I love it.

School Holidaying

We are into our second and final week of the school holidays.  It has been a good one, with lots of outdoor time, a bit of sunshine, family and friends visiting, café visits and playground trips.

I love this time with the kids, a break from term time and it's routines.  We live in a coastal town, surrounded by hills, orchards, vineyards and farmland.  There are no huge shopping malls or amusement parks here.  We have one movie theatre.  We would love an indoor playground or Ten Pin bowling centre.......that would be great.

So school holidays can be pretty inexpensive here.  There is no pressure to spend money on expensive outings as there is nothing expensive to go to!  The movies would be the most pricey outing, although so far we haven't been this school holidays.

For my boys who are three and five - they are at an age where they are easily entertained.  We go to the beach, into town for fluffies (babycino's) and to the park most days.  For my teen, she heads into town with friends and goes for sleepover's.

A few weeks ago a neighbour gifted us a kayak and paddle.  We have a creek that runs along the front of our property.  It dries up over summer and fills to the brim when we have heavy winter rains.  At the moment it is ankle deep, deep enough it seems for these three to spend hours going up and down the creek, through a tunnel....up and down.

It reminds me of when I was little - our house backed onto a reserve with a creek.  We used to spend hours in that creek, walking through tunnels and building rafts to see how far we could sail along.  only returning home to eat or change muddy and wet clothes.

Term 4 is nearly here - swimming will start up for the boys and Bell will have her dance classes.  Back into the swing of term time and the coming summer months.

I'm going to savour these last few days.

Out East

We are nearing the end of the school holidays here.  It has been a really good 2 weeks, and as usual it has flown by.

Today we took a drive around the coast, just an hour north of our town, where the landscape turns a little wild and rugged.  Green rolling hills, sheep and cattle galore.

The wind was freezing so we layered up and ventured out for a walk along Tolaga Bay Wharf.  The boys loved it, Tom treated us to his version of the Haka.  I clung onto little hands in the hope that no one would go "swimming".  It is a popular spot for wharf jumping and fishing over summer.  We will come back again when the sun is warm and shining.

The views are breathtaking, even when it's cold and a little grey.

Afterwards we headed into the small town nearby for pies (with the best ever buttery pastry), hot chips and steaming cups of coffee.

According to Tom it was "the best day ever"................and I couldn't agree more xo

Far North adventures

Glimpses of our road trip to the Far North for Christmas and New Years.  Time spent with my dad.  Two weeks away.  I really do love this beautiful part of New Zealand.

At the beach......a favourite spot.

The kids favourite place was Lake Ngatu.  We came here to swim sometimes twice a day.  Safe and shallow at the waters edge.  A perfect place for the boys to get water confident.

A day trip to the picturesque Hokianga Harbour...........

Fish n chips by the beach..........

Stunning Opononi Beach.

And a visit to see Tane Mahuta - a 2000 year old Kauri Tree.

Happy January lovely readers!  If you are in the Northern Hemisphere I hope you are staying safe and warm with all the wild weather that is about.  xo
