No TV!

We are a no TV watching household.

We do watch DVD's though - and have done so alot over winter - it's been a very wet one.

Now we are coming into summer I'm hoping to switch off even more.

When we moved to our house in March we decided not to connect the TV up to the aerial - we are not sure if it even works!

We were BIG TV watchers before.  It was always on, far too much.  Even if we were not watching I liked having it on as a bit of "background/company" noise.

It took me a couple of weeks of wanting to plug in again.  Then nothing................... I don't miss it, especially the advertisments.  I'm especially looking forward to not hearing all of the lead up to Christmas advertising.  I love love Christmas but not all of the mainly child targeted advertising.

It took me two months to cancel our Sky Subscription.  I kept thinking there was a possibility we might switch back on.  I was especially proud that we did'nt cave when the Queens Jubilee or the Olympics were on - it was close though, we nearly did.  Especially as alot of the events were held around where we lived, worked and played when living in London.

I have finally finished the kids playroom so I'm hoping this will distract them even more.  They go in there first thing in the morning and are often in there in the evening.  We tend to put a movie on after dinner/bathtime.  A bit of wind down before bed.  And of course there is the garden.  I love it when they want to do nothing more than play outside.

Do you have TV in your household?

What rules/boundaries do you set for your children?

  1. I think it's great you don't have a TV. We didn't have one for quite a few years, then my Dad insisted we have my old childhood black and white portable! Ada :)

  2. We have TV, but it has become a firmly established habit that we read the listings, and only switch on to watch specific programmes of choice, then switch off again. Our children grew up with this "rule", and now as adults they hardly watch TV at all.

    1. That is a great idea Joy - the key is to switch off when finished xo

  3. My sister has 7 children and they haven't had a TV in yeeeeaaaarrss!! Like you, they do watch dvd's but no actual TV! I do like it but the only downfall is that when they come to visit us they are glued to the telly with mouths open and don't blink their eyes in fear they'll miss something! Lol... It's quite fascinating to watch!

I have a rule with Sunny. She has set times to watch and then she has to go outside. She loves it outside! There are days when she doesn't ask for the telly at all! And I totally understand the whole hating ad's thing! They can get a bit annoying...

By the way... Have you checked the winner of my Kikki.K Giveaway yet?! I think you better...

  4. The kids can watch TV from 4:30pm (when playschool comes on) until dinner time (up to an hour). We rarely watch live TV, recording shows on a DVD recorder to watch later (without ads). Some days "4:30" comes a bit earlier...

    1. Great idea - I sometimes end up putting a movie on around dinner. Usually to keep my youngest entertained. Otherwise he tends to hang off my legs while I try to get dinner ready.
